Sports Vision Performance Evaluation in Carmel, Indiana

A sports vision evaluation measures how well an athlete’s eyes, brain and body work together at game speed, not just how clearly they see a chart. At Ares Elite Sports Vision it is a 75-minute, in-person session in Carmel, Indiana, run by Dr. Joseph LaPlaca, OD. It costs $449 and ends with a written breakdown of your measurements.

It is not a standard eye exam, and it does not replace your regular eye care.

What does a sports vision evaluation test?

The 75-minute evaluation measures each of these, from visual clarity and eye teaming to reaction time and performance under load:

Visual clarity
Eye teaming
Eye alignment
Depth perception
Tracking
Peripheral awareness
Visual processing speed
Raw reaction time
Choice reaction time
Decision speed
Eye-hand coordination
Cognitive control
Performance under load

Why measure more than eyesight?

Athletes do not lose milliseconds in one place. They lose them across the system: seeing late, processing slowly, choosing incorrectly, reacting inefficiently, or failing to synchronize the eyes, brain, and body under pressure. The evaluation helps identify where the bottleneck is.

One response, five stagesexample profileExample profile, not a measurement or a diagnosis. One response split into five stages: see, process, choose, react and synchronize. In this example every stage takes the same share except process, which takes 60 ms longer and pushes every later stage back: that stage is the bottleneck.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

The evaluation takes 75 minutes, in person at 510 W. Carmel Dr., 2nd Floor, Carmel, IN 46032. It costs $449: book your time, then pay online. A re-evaluation is a separate $299 session: a follow-up measurement compared with your own baseline.

Who is the evaluation for?

Evaluations start at age 10, and training starts at age 12. Training by sport

What happens after the evaluation?

After the evaluation, athletes receive a clearer picture of their visual and cognitive performance profile. If training is recommended, Ares builds a structured plan designed around the athlete’s measured needs, sport demands, and performance goals.

Sports vision evaluation questions

What tests are in a sports vision evaluation?

The Ares evaluation covers your visual history and sport demands; visual clarity, clarity on moving targets and contrast sensitivity; eye teaming, alignment and depth perception; gaze tracking and saccadic (eye-jump) speed; peripheral awareness; raw and choice reaction time on tactile reaction boards; eye-hand coordination; and decision speed under strobe occlusion and physical load.

The technology behind each measurement

Is a sports vision evaluation the same as an eye exam or a sports-physical vision screening?

No. A routine eye exam checks eye health and how clearly you see a still chart. A sports-physical screening checks that you meet a minimum eyesight standard. The Ares evaluation measures visual and reaction performance under sport demands. It is not a medical eye examination and does not replace your regular eye care.

Who runs the sports vision evaluation?

Dr. Joseph LaPlaca, OD, the optometrist who founded Ares Elite Sports Vision in 2018, runs the evaluations at the Carmel practice. He has nearly 19 years of clinical experience, 8.5 in sports vision and cognitive performance.

Training sessions afterwards are run by Dr. LaPlaca or an A.R.E.S. Certified Trainer, depending on the athlete’s program. Ares has completed 2,500+ evaluations and 8,000 training sessions (45 minutes each), with 800,000+ data points recorded.
